Over 200 dogs removed from rural dwelling in the south east

Mixed crossbreeds including Poms, Terriers, Collies and others were found at the location in Ferns, County Wexford.

Over 200 dogs who were unused to handling and many very old and sick dogs were recovered from the house in the Ferns area.

The operation involved Wexford County Council staff, WSPCA Inspectors, NWSPCA Personnel and an Garda Siochana while the Department of Agriculture District Veterinary Office has also been advised of the situation.

A considerable number of the dogs had to be put to sleep on humane grounds after consultations with animal welfare inspectors and vets, while around 60 dogs have been taken by the WSPCA, NWSPCA and Dogs Trust for possible re-homing.

Investigations are at an early stage but it's believed  the large accumulation of dogs may be the result of uncontrolled breeding where the residents of the property may have had difficulty coping.

The Council will be making no further comment pending the completion of the investigation into this tragic matter.
