Pieta House gets planning permission for site in Waterford

Pieta House is coming to the South East.

It's been confirmed they have been granted planning permission for a site in the Waterside area of Waterford City.

Pieta House is a centre for the prevention of self-harm and suicide, and last year Beat 102 103 supported the Pieta Challenge, whereby local man Enda O'Doherty walked from Belfast to Waterford with a washing machine on his back.

Waterford Mayor John Cummins says it's badly needed, and is delighted it's finally here:

'I'm a young person myself at 28 years of age and the statistics are startling. There's 600 people a year that die by suicide and that's only the reported statistics so it could be much higher.'

He added: 'So it is a very serious issue particularly for young people although not confined to young people, so it's very important that we have the services and it is important that the message goes out that there is help there for anybody that is in that situation that is feeling very down and that the help is there.'
