Road safety warnings issued as changing clocks give way to darker evenings

Road users in the South East are being reminded to take care in darker conditions.

It comes as clocks are going back an hour tonight from 2am.

Carlow County Council's Road Safety Officer John McDarby is urging motorists to take care as the evening grow darker coming into the winter.

Speaking to Beat News, he says drivers should take into account vulnerable road users

"With the clocks going back the first thing we're going to notice is the evenings will be much darker much earlier. So, drivers and other road users need to be aware of the other vulnerable road users that are out there. The pedestrians, the cyclists and people on e-scooters."

McDarby also says high-vis clothing is so important for pedestrians but so is courtesy.

He says respect for others on the roads is essential this winter time;

"High-vis material is wonderful. You can see it at least 150m away, maybe up to 300m away on a straight road. And that gives anyone a really really great chance.

The two things that are going to be of most use to us this winter time are high vis clothing and courtesy from other road users."
