A South East village has come up with a novel way of fundraising for their parish

Barntown, just outside Wexford, is looking for their next Mayor, after an almost 40 year break when the position was last held.

The initiative, an idea of the finance committee for the local church, wants candidates to raise money by taking part in a series of challenges.

The 6 candidates include Donie O'Dowd, Martina Brazzill, Mag Gurhy, Billy Codd, Tom Dempsey and Declan Power.

They've all been set various challenges to raise money including fancy dress parades & 'come dine with me' competitions

Denis Sinnott, Chairperson of the Race to be Mayor of Barntown, explains what the money is being raised for.

"Barntown has been a very, very good parish.

It's spent an awful amount of money over the years developing a new School and a new pitch and doing alot of work within the community.

Now, obviously every parish or curacy as Barntown is, the funds are limited and there's alot of project which have been started and not completed and all the monies raised from this are being spent back in the parish."
