Students in the South East are making a return to architecture

Architecture courses at WIT saw a 40% upswing in first preferences by the traditional 1 February deadline.

Now secondary students in the south east interested in Architecture are being invited to a W.I.T Open Day.

The Department of Architecture, Waterford Institute of Technology is hosting an open morning on Saturday 19th March for transition year, 5th year and 6th year students interested in courses that can be applied for through the CAO.

The event is an opportunity for second level students and their families to visit the Architecture & Architectural Technology Studios, view student work and meet with staff and students of the Department.

Sharon O'Brien Head of the Department of Architecture told Beat News WIT is also receiving requests from employers about where graduates are and whether any are in the south east for work.

"I think between the success of the economy at the moment and projects that might have been put on hold now beginning to come back on stream, there's a greater confidence out there. Also our own graduates are spreading the word of the quality of the courses in WIT and that's helping a great deal with the uptake.

I'm actually getting emails at the moment from companies in the south east who are looking for our graduates."

WIT is one of only five schools of architecture in Republic. First outside Dublin to be RIAI accredited.

It is 10 years this year since the programme began and WIT's Department of Architecture will celebrate this with a showcase of students' and graduates work based in the south east later this year.

A lot of WIT's Department of Architecture projects are based in south east.

The Department of Architecture Studio Open Day is taking place from 11am-1pm Saturday, 19 March, at The Granary, Hanover Place, the Quay, Waterford City.
