The Solas Run and Walk for Life is back

The Solas Run and Walk for Life is back

The Solas Cancer Support Centre’s 10K Run and Walk Life returns to the streets of Waterford City on Sunday 9th October 2022.

After a two-year absence the team in Solas are pleased to be holding the event in person and this year have also added a 10K walk in Dungarvan on Saturday 8th October.

Tracy McDaid, Manager of the Solas Cancer Support Centre, explains what it means to be holding the event in person this year: “We were blown away by the response to the virtual event over the last two years. This incredible community support shows the high regard that the charity is held within the southeast and how valuable these free services are to our clients.

We also know that there is nothing like the atmosphere of the real event- the sea of orange t shirts,  families and friends coming together to support each other, the positivity along the route, the emotion at the finish line and the fun filled activities in the Park for all ages. We just can’t wait for the weekend- it’s always the highlight of the year.”

Speaking at the launch, Gwen Daniels, General Manager, UPMC Whitfield Hospital, said; “As the main sponsor of the Run and Walk for Life, UPMC is delighted to partner with the Solas Cancer Support Centre again this year. UPMC Hillman Cancer Centre, with locations in Waterford and Cork, is one of the largest integrated networks of cancer experts in the world.”

Ms Daniels continued; “For over a decade, patients across the south east have received oncology care at UPMC facilities, and our on going partnership with the Solas Cancer Support Centre and our support of the Run and Walk for life, guarantees that they receive the comprehensive care necessary throughout their cancer journey. We look forward to supporting this in person with our 1,200 team members in Ireland, and encouraging over 92,000 UPMC employees worldwide to take part in the hybrid event.”

Media partner Beat is pleased to be continuing its longstanding partnership with the charity and CEO Gabrielle Cummins explains more:

“We are so excited to be welcoming back the sea of orange to the streets of our region’s capital city.  Beat has partnered with Solas Cancer Support Centre for over a decade and we’re very proud to be associated with an initiative that is so widely supported among the community. 2022 will see us diversifying the partnership with a focus on encouraging more young people to get involved and help raise more vital funds for this worthy cause. The last few years have highlighted that life is precious and so is our freedom to get out into the open and walk or run. I would encourage everyone to take part in this family, fun filled event and #GoOrangeForSolas this October!”

The 2022 event will offer three options to those taking part- the main 10k Run and Walk on Sunday 9th October starting at 12.30pm on the Quay in Waterford City, a 10K walk along the Greenway from Walton Park in Dungarvan starting at 11am on Saturday 8th October and the popular virtual option is also available. This year the organisers hope to encourage family friends from around the world to also take part in the virtual option with the aim of seeing the iconic orange UPMC sponsored t-shirts across the globe. Workplaces and schools are also being encouraged to once again #GoOrangeForSolas.
