Tipperary TD calls Taoiseach's hospital visit an 'insult'

Independent TD Mattie McGrath says the Taoiseach's visit to Tipperary University Hospital yesterday was an 'insult to local TDs'.

The Independent TD for Tipperary says local politicians haven't been able to meet with management due to Covid restrictions.

Deputy McGrath said he declined an invite to the opening of 40 new beds in a modular unit, as he felt it would have been inappropriate considering ongoing visitor restrictions in hospitals due to the pandemic.

Mattie McGrath, from the The Rural Independent Group, says Micheál Martin's visit yesterday was in bad taste given the rising Covid case numbers:

"It's an insult to us those that represent the community. We're trying to find out all the time, meeting staff, hearing awful stories of ambulances booked up.

I regularly get calls A&E chocobloc, lack of doctors and here we have this kind of parallel universe, then a visit to see all is honky dorey but it's not, I have been requesting meetings with the manager for the last six months and I keep getting put off."
