Waterford Samaritans Branch release Annual report

Last night saw the launch of Waterford Samaritans annual report.

The branch in Waterford is celebating 40 years in operation.

Their vision is that fewer people will die by suicide in the future.

Anthony Hamiliton is the Director of Waterford South East Smaritans - he tells Beat News about the reports finding:

"In 2015 our 120 volunteers here in our Waterford branch have supported & listened to people for 7 and a half thousand hours during 2015 but pople think sometimes that's all we do, just answer phones but it's not.

We're out in the community publicsing what we do. We try to reach people that are a high risk so we're just trying to get them to realise they aren't alone, that there's always someone there to help them"

20-24 year old men have the highest suicide rates in Ireland.
Ireland is 4th highest for suicide rates in Europe in young men aged 15-19.

Carlow has the highest suicide rates among women in the country.

Waterford city has the second highest suicide rates among men in the country.
