Research proves laughing is good for you

There's good news for those of us who prefer watching comedy shows on TV to going for a run.

Research suggests laughing can burn off up to 120 calories an hour, while even sniggering can burn off 10 an hour.

But comedian and GP Doctor Phil Hammond says laughing for that long is unlikely - although there are other health benefits.

"Whether you lose weight or not through laughter, it is good for you because it's generally a pleasurable thing to do. It gives you some sense of connection with the person who's making you laugh or the people you're sharing that laughter with.

"That's really good for your emotional health and your physical health", he concludes.
