Dogs Trust Ireland have removed all photographs of dogs looking for their forever homes from its website today to highlight that a dog is #NotJustAPrettyFace.

The charity is encouraging the public not to judge a ‘pup by his cover’ and consider adopting a dog based on their personality, rather than just the way they look.

As part of the valentines campaign, the charity will also be offering a matchmaking service to those looking to make a furry friend for life.

Visitors to their Rehoming Centre in Finglas can describe their ideal dog’s personality and the team will do their utmost to help them find their perfect dog.

Speaking about the decision, Head of Operations at Dogs Trust, Karla Dunne said: “Dogs have so much more to offer than the way the look! They are amazing, loyal and loving companions and we would love people to visit our Rehoming Centre with an open mind about the dog that could be perfect for them.

We have some fantastic dogs that are regularly overlooked in favour of their smaller, fluffier friends and we feel people are really missing out on those dogs and what they could bring to their lives

As the average dog lives for 13 years, it’s important that you have picked the right dog for you, so don’t let size, breed or appearance scupper your chances of finding him or her.”

With over 164 dogs longing to find love in Dogs Trust, the charity have also come up with the top five reasons dogs make the best Valentine's Day dates:

1. Dogs don’t care about your appearance, clothes, weight, shape or size; they just love you for who you are!

2. They are ALWAYS happy to see you, even if you’ve just nipped upstairs for two minutes.

3. Dogs are funny, intelligent, goofy and always ready for adventures.

4. Although dogs have their own unique ways of communicating, you don’t have to worry about them upsetting you by saying the wrong thing!

5. Snuggles – could there be anything better in the world than your dog snuggling into you on the sofa in the evening?
