A community in Carlow is in shock after the sudden passing of a "beautiful"  and "adored" mother of one.

Rachel O'Connor of Burrin Road, Carlow town passed away on Tuesday, November 8th at St. Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny following a sudden illness.

Carlow Camogie has since posted to social media, paying tribute to the "lively camogie player" who represented her county at underage level and her club at adult level.

The touching post reads: "To her heartbroken family son Ronan, mother Bridget, father David, sisters Emma and Sarah, partner, her grandmothers, grandfather, aunts, uncles and extended family and friends we extend our deepest sympathy. Ar dhéis Dé go raibh a hanam."

A post on RIP.ie describes a caring mother, partner, daughter, granddaughter and sister; "loving mother of Ronan, adored daughter of David and Bridget, cherished sister Emma and Sarah, beloved partner of Adam and much-loved granddaughter of Davy and Breda O’Connor and Anne Proctor. She will be sadly missed by her loving son, parents, sisters, partner, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, relatives and her wide circle of friends."

Family, friends and members of the local community have also posted online to offer their condolences.

One wrote: "may her lovely young soul rest and sleep in peace", while another posted: you were never afraid to live your life in your own unique way and to experience the highs and lows that life presented you."

Perhaps the most touching tribute came from a former teammate, it reads: "It was a privilege to share the pitch with you whilst at Naomh Bríd, you always had great humour and never failed to put a smile on all our faces."

Rachel will be laid to rest at St Mary’s Cemetery, Carlow following a funeral mass at Holy Family Church, Askea.
