Waterford FC confirm the signing of Alex Baptiste

Waterford FC have completed the signing of former English Premier League defender Alex Baptiste.

Baptiste, 36, brings a wealth of experience to the Blues, as they look to gain promotion from the League of Ireland First Division.

The Englishman becomes the first signing since Andy Pilley’s takeover earlier this month.

Most recently, the defender played his football at English Football League side Bolton Wanderers, where he featured 60 times for The Trotters in a two-year spell at the Club.

Baptiste, who played in the Premier League for Blackpool, has played more than 500 games for the likes of Queens Park Rangers, Middlesborough, Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End.

New Chairman and Owner Pilley added: “We are delighted to make Alex the first signing of the new era at Waterford FC.
“We have a very young and exciting side and feel with the addition of experience we can compete towards the end of the season with the play-offs in mind.
"Alex is a top professional who’s played most of his career in the top two leagues in England, to be able to persuade him to join Waterford is a real signal of intent for us all.
“We are delighted to see Alex join Danny Searle’s squad."
Baptiste will join up with his new teammates this week and will wear the number 5 shirt at the club, subject to international clearance.
The news comes a matter of days before the Blue's South East derby with Wexford FC.
Kick off at Ferrycarrig Park is Friday 2nd September at 7:45 pm.
